HBO Opens Talks on ‘Sopranos’ Syndication

HBO has begun discussions with cable networks about rerun rights to its mob hit “The Sopranos.” But insiders at the pay cable network warn that the talks might not result in a sale, partly because there remains a division of opinion as to whether a show as indelibly linked to HBO should be allowed to appear on another channel.

The reruns would be available in fall 2006, after the last season of the series is set to appear on HBO. HBO is making pitches to networks, including TNT, USA, Spike TV, A&E, FX and Lifetime and is seeking up to $1.8 million for each of the 78 episodes. It was unclear whether HBO would also consider making the show available to TV stations for weekend airings.

An HBO spokesman declined to comment on the syndication plans.
