Scripps Networks on Friday said it had hired former Martha Stewart Living magazine publisher Erik Thorkilsen as senior VP of business development. He starts Jan. 17.

The hiring of Mr. Thorkilsen comes as Scripps Networks looks to develop new revenue streams to bolster the massive growth seen at its cable networks, which include Food Network, HGTV, DIY-Do It Yourself, Fine Living, Shop at Home and Great American Country.

“While growing our television networks remains a top priority, we also see great potential in the development of new businesses that will lead to the creation of new profit centers for our company,” said Scripps Networks President John Lansing, to whom Mr. Thorkilsen will report.

Mr. Thorkilsen came from the Time Warner unit This Old House Ventures, where as president he was responsible for building ancillary businesses around the “This Old House” weekly television series, including books, videos and licensing deals.

Before that, he was publisher of Martha Stewart Living magazine when it was owned by Time Warner, and prior to that held various positions at several magazines, including Time, Sports Illustrated and People.

Scripps also has promoted Cherie Oswald to VP of business development, reporting to Mr. Thorkilsen. Previously in Scripps’ finance department, Ms. Oswald will work out of the company’s Knoxville, Tenn., office, while Mr. Thorkilsen will be based in New York.
