Dan Rather’s last appearance as anchor of “CBS Evening News” on Wednesday, March 9, will be followed at 8 p.m. by a memoir special, “Dan Rather: A Reporter Remembers,” in which he talks about his 24 years at the “Evening” anchor desk and the past five decades of his life. “48 Hours” executive producer Susan Zirinsky is executive producer of the hour, and “48 Hours” executive editor Al Briganti is executive editor of the special.

“Dan Rather” will air in the time slot usually occupied by “60 Minutes Wednesday,” the magazine that carried Mr. Rather’s September 2004 report that used disputed documents to question President Bush’s Vietnam War-era Texas Air National Guard service. One producer was fired after an investigation into the how the story ended up on the air. Three producers and executives were asked to resign but have not yet done so.

After signing off as “CBS Evening News” anchor, Mr. Rather will report primarily for “60 Minutes Wednesday.” “Face the Nation” moderator Bob Schieffer has been tapped as “Evening News” interim anchor.
