With help from college basketball, CBS won the week ended March 27 in both total viewers and the adults 18 to 49 demographic, but the top-rated show for the week in the demo was still Fox’s “American Idol.”

The Tuesday edition of “Idol” was the No. 1 show of the week in adults 18 to 49 with an 11.6 rating, according to Nielsen Media Research. After a month of pre-emptions and repeats, an original episode of ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” came in second in the demo with a 10.7. Wednesday’s “Idol” scored a 9.0, while a hastily planned Thursday results edition of “Idol” that took into account a voting snafu was fourth with an 8.6. Despite winning the week in adults 18 to 49, CBS had only one show in the top five — a special Wednesday “Survivor: Palau,” which scored a 7.3. CBS’s strength came in the depth of its performance, with its “CSI” franchise, Monday comedies, “Amazing Race” and basketball dominating the top 20 highest-rated shows in the demo.

Rankings in total viewers mirrored the results in adults 18 to 49. The No. 1 show in viewers was Tuesday’s “Idol” (27.60 million), followed by “Housewives” (24.08 million), Wednesday’s “Idol” (20.89 million), Thursday’s “Idol” results show (20.17 million) and “Survivor” (19.15 million).

CBS won the week in the demo with a 4.6, followed by Fox (4.3), ABC (3.2), NBC (3.1) UPN (1.3) and The WB (1.0).

In total viewers CBS garnered 13.93 million, followed by Fox (10.32 million), ABC (8.72 million), NBC (8.63 million), UPN (3.17 million) and The WB (2.61 million).
