FCC Approves Granite/Malara Moves

Granite Broadcasting said Tuesday that the Federal Communications Commission has approved its purchase of NBC affiliate WISE-TV in Fort Wayne, Ind., from New Vision Television.

Meanwhile, the FCC also approved a related transaction in which Malara Broadcast Group acquired Granite’s Fort Wayne ABC affiliate, WPTA-TV, and New Vision’s CBS affiliate in Duluth, Minn., KDLH-TV. The agency also approved a proposal for Granite, which owns the NBC affiliate in Duluth, to provide certain operational functions for the Malara-owned stations in Duluth and Fort Wayne.

The entire transaction became a source of controversy last year after the FCC received protests from other station owners in the affected markets claiming Malara and Granite’s shared-services agreement would circumvent the rules governing duopolies in smaller markets.
