National Geographic Channel is planning new programming that pushes into areas now covered by other networks.

At its upfront presentation Wednesday, the network unveiled new series, including “Big Science” and “Mega-Weather,” and specials that look at historical events and people, including “Hannibal,” “Spartacus & Herod,” “The San Francisco Earthquake,” “Space Race” and “The Last 24 Hours of Abraham Lincoln.”

Another special, a drama-documentary “Blackbeard” is scheduled to air the same time The Walt Disney Co.’s “Pirates of the Caribbean II” is released.
