Nielsen Responds to Congressional Concerns

Nielsen Media Research responded Monday to a letter sent by several members of Congress to the Federal Trade Commission with a statement reiterating its commitment to work with the Media Rating Council.

The lawmakers’ letter, sent to FTC chairwoman Deborah Majoras last week, expressed concern regarding Nielsen’s deployment of Local People Meters without the accreditation of the MRC, the group charged with overseeing television ratings. “We request that you promptly determine what role the commission can play in assisting the Congress in this matter,” the letter said.

In its response, Nielsen said, “We believe that regulation of the ratings industry is unnecessary given the extensive consultation that already takes place between Nielsen and its clients.” The company added that regulation would give “large, politically connected media companies a chance to influence the ratings process to their advantage, as certain of them have recently attempted.”
