Insight Communications, the cable operator whose management plans to take private later this year, on Thursday reported a widened first-quarter loss, even as the company reported growth in digital cable and high-speed data customers.

The company said its first-quarter red ink hit $8.3 million, compared with a year-ago loss of $6.8 million, even as revenue climbed 13 percent to $269.3 million.

The revenue growth was a result of a 33 percent rise in high-speed data customers to 367,000, and a 2 percent increase in digital cable subscribers to 459,000, which helped offset a net loss of 1,100 basic-cable subscribers.
