After six years as senior White House correspondent, CNN’s John King has been named chief national correspondent. He will remain based in Washington.

“During his on-site reporting of the tsunami aftermath, we witnessed the breadth of John’s capabilities beyond the White House beat. Our viewers are better served by having him out in the field,” said CNN/U.S. President Jonathan Klein. Mr. King joined CNN in 1997 after 12 years with the Associated Press.

For the immediate future, CNN will rotate people, some already assigned to the White House, some not, to cover the gap created by Mr. King’s reassignment.
