The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is calling for entries in a new juried Emmy category: Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking. The category is open to prime-time nonfiction films. Reality programming and works of journalism are not eligible.

“Candidates for nomination will be selected from the entries that demonstrate profound social impact, significant innovation of form and/or remarkable mastery of how filmmaking technique perpetuates the power of the art form,” said Shari Cookson, governor of the academy’s nonfiction programming peer group.

Submission deadline is May 13. The winner will be announced at the 2005 Creative Arts Awards on Sept. 11 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
