Alliance Atlantis Communications, the Canadian broadcasting and production company that co-produces the “CSI” series, reported Monday that it swung to a first-quarter profit, driven in part by the strength of the “CSI” franchise.

The Toronto-based company posted a profit of $23.2 million ($18.3 million), compared with a year-ago loss of $2 million. Revenue surged 25 percent to $265 million from $208.7 million.

The results came as Alliance Atlantis saw gains in its broadcasting and entertainment operations, which more than offset weakness in motion picture distribution, which was impacted by box-office underperformance and the release of certain films.

The entertainment division, which includes the results from the “CSI” franchise, posted gains related to having delivered 22 orders of the franchise in the first quarter, compared with 16 in the year-ago period.
