Carrie Underwood Named ‘American Idol’

Carrie Underwood of Checotah, Okla., won Fox’s “American Idol” competition Wednesday, winning herself a recording contract and huge ratings for the Fox network; “Idol” outdelivered ABC’s season finale of the mystery series “Lost.”

The two-hour “Idol” finale scored a 12.2 preliminary national rating among adults 18 to 49 and garnered 29.4 million total viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. “Idol” outperformed last season’s Wednesday finale (5/26/04), growing 2 percent among adults 18 to 49 (12.2 versus 12.0) and 2 percent in total viewers (29.4 million versus 28.8 million). Airing head-to-head from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (ET), “Idol” outdelivered the highly anticipated season finale of ABC’s “Lost” by 61 percent among adults 18 to 49 (12.2 versus 7.6) and 46 percent in total viewers (29.4 million versus 20.2 million).
