The new public relations chief for the CNN News Group is Laurie Goldberg, whose most recent assignment was senior VP of public relations for Turner Broadcasting’s Cartoon Network, where she positioned Adult Swim as a hip late night programming block.

The announcement that Ms. Goldberg has been named senior VP of PR for the CNN News Group was made by Shirley Powell, senior VP of corporate communications for Turner Broadcasting System. Ms. Powell said that effective June 6, Ms. Goldberg will oversee all public relations for all CNN News Group entities except CNN International.

Ms. Goldberg, who will report to Ms. Powell, will have offices in Atlanta and New York, where Christa Robinson remains senior VP of public relations for CNN.

“As someone who came of age with CNN and has the utmost respect for its journalism, its people and its global presence, I could not be more excited about this opportunity to be a part of its future,” Ms. Goldberg said. “The CNN management team values new ideas, approaches and voices. CNN has a great story to tell. I look forward to working with the public relations team to tell it.”

For Ms. Goldberg, who joined Turner in 1998, this is her first job in news. However, Ms. Powell said, “She is a news junkie at heart. She is the best read person I’ve ever met.”

“Of all the strengths Laurie brings to this critical role, what most impresses me, and what ultimately will be most valuable to CNN, is her versatility,” Ms. Powell said in the announcement. “Her skill at messaging on behalf of leading brands to targeted audiences in highly competitive markets is exactly what CNN needs now to help extend its momentum. She is ideally suited for this challenging assignment, and I know she’ll run with it.”

“I like her ideas, her candor and her respect for news and news people,” said Jim Walton, president of the CNN News Group.
