Mark Kaline, the global media manager for Ford Motor Co., was elected chairman of the 35-person Council for Research Excellence last week.

He was elected at the first meeting of the group charged with managing the $2.5 million research and development fund created last winter by Nielsen Media Research.

Larry Bobo, a professor of sociology at Stanford University, was voted co-chairman.

Also at the meeting, the group formed a steering committee that will oversee council operations and advise the council on research projects.

The nine named to the steering committee were Mr. Kaline, TVB Senior VP of Research Susan Cuccinello, ABC Senior VP of Audience Analysis Henry DeVault, OMD Worldwide Director of Global Research and Communication Insights Mike Hess, Media Rating Council Executive Director George Ivie, Tribune Broadcasting Group VP John Reardon, Univision Senior VP for Corporate Research Ceril Shagrin, CAB VP of Research and Insight Ira Sussman and Turner Broadcasting Chief Research Officer Jack Wakshlag.

The council plans to hold a second meeting in late July. The steering committee also plans to meet in a few weeks.

Still being assembled is a technology advisory panel that will consult with the board and steering committee.
