WCVB-TV President and General Manager Paul La Camera, regarded as one of the country’s consummate local station executives, will retire from the powerful Hearst-Argyle-owned ABC affiliate in Boston at the end of the year.

Mr. La Camera’s TV career started when he joined WCVB at its founding in 1972. In 1988 he was named VP and general manager, and he became president in 1997.

Bill Fine, president and general manager of sister station WBAL-TV in Baltimore since 1998, will succeed Mr. La Camera, who will continue to consult with the station and Hearst-Argyle Television.

The transition will begin Aug. 1 when Mr. Fine, once WCVB’s VP and general sales manager, returns to the Boston station as executive VP and general manager. Mr. Fine will be named president of the station upon Mr. La Camera’s retirement Dec. 31.
