The Washington rumor mill had it late Tuesday that the White House will announce its picks for the pending openings at the Federal Communications Commission as soon as the end of this week-and the front-runners for the two Republican positions are said to be Mike Meece and Deborah Taylor Tate.

Mr. Meece is a former Department of Commerce official now serving as a special assistant to the president and deputy director of the Office of Public Liaison at the White House. Ms. Tate is a director of the Tennessee Regulatory Authority, which regulates telecommunications and utility companies in the state.
