NBC has picked up a drama pilot featuring a minister who is visited by a modern-day Jesus who may be real or may be the result of the reverend’s addiction to prescription pills. “The Book of Daniel,” from Sony Pictures Television/NBC Universal Television Studio, is slated for midseason 2005-06.

The announcement was made Thursday by Kevin Reilly, president of NBC Entertainment. The pilot had been in contention before the May upfronts, but was initially passed on when it did not make the fall schedule and not included in NBC’s initial midseason pickups.

“Daniel” stars Aidan Quinn as the Rev. Daniel Webster, who is struggling to balance family pressures with his professional life. The series also stars Garret Dillahunt (“Deadwood”), Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, Susanna Thompson (“Now and Again”), Christian Campbell (“Trick”), Alison Pill (“Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen”) and Ivan Shaw (“All My Children”).

Jack Kenny (“Titus”) and Flody Suarez (“8 Simple Rules”) are executive producing.
