Nielsen-Anystream Agreement Advances VOD Measurement

Nielsen Media Research has taken another step toward measurement of video-on-demand viewing with a non-exclusive agreement that allows software provider Anystream to deploy its automated VOD content production solution with Nielsen VOD encoding technology already built in.

The agreement, according to the Wednesday announcement by Nielsen, “eliminates complex and costly post-installation upgrades and enables content providers, MSOs and distributors using Anystream’s Agility VOD software to seamlessly apply VOD audio codes to content, in support of Nielsen’s announced VOD Measurement Plan.”

Nielsen plans to incorporate VOD usage into its ratings service from its national and metered-market samples in phases, starting in the second quarter of 2006, with programming that is watched within seven days of its initial airing on traditional television. By the fourth quarter of 2006, Nielsen plans to measure VOD viewership of theatrical movies, pay-per-view events and older TV programs.
