The most famous moment in the 35 years of “Monday Night Football” was not about a football game. It was the following, from Dec. 8, 1980.

The New England Patriots were playing the Miami Dolphins. With millions tuned in to the game, Howard Cosell stunned the nation with this announcement:

“Remember, this is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses. An unspeakable tragedy (from) ABC News in New York. John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the West Side of New York City–the most famous, perhaps, of all the Beatles–shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital–dead on arrival.”
