The Federal Communications Commission has scheduled an open meeting for Sept. 15 that will focus on the impact that Hurricane Katrina has had on communications services in the Gulf Coast states.

In a joint statement, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin and Commissioner Michael Copps, who toured the devastated areas this week, said they were encouraged by efforts to restore communications services.

“We are committed to doing everything within our power to aid these extraordinary recovery efforts,” they said. “But in the long term, we will need to learn from this event and work together to improve the reliability, survivability and security of our nation’s telecommunications networks.”
