Preliminary unaudited tallies from phone and online contributions indicate that the Sept. 9 telethon “Shelter From the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast” raised an estimated $30 million for the American Red Cross’s and Salvation Army’s efforts to assist Hurricane Katrina victims.

“Shelter,” which ran on all six broadcast networks, PBS and dozens of cable networks, garnered 38.3 million viewers, who watched at least part of the special. Viewer numbers do not reflect those who watched via Internet, listened on radio or saw broadcasts that aired more than 200 countries.
