SBC Asks FCC to Ease IP Video Requirements

SBC Communications has asked the Federal Communications Commission to rule that Internet-protocol video services such as the company’s Project Lightspeed are not subject to traditional cable franchising requirements.

In a filing Wednesday at the FCC, SBC argued, among other things, that telcos need to include video in their new integrated service packages to justify the investment necessary to roll out IP-enabled broadband networks.

“Application of traditional franchise regulation originally designed for the monopoly characteristics of the cable market … could suffocate this nascent telco competition before it can gain momentum,” SBC said.
