Forbes’ Annual Wealthiest List

Charter Communications Chairman Paul Allen ranked as the third-richest person in the United States, moving up one notch from a year ago and continuing his reign as the wealthiest person in the media and entertainment industries, according to the latest figures from Forbes magazine. Mr. Allen, who made his fortune co-founding software giant Microsoft, saw his wealth grow to $22.5 billion from a year-earlier $21 billion.

His Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, continued to reign atop the Forbes list, with a net worth of $51 billion.

Other media names on the list include the following:

  • Barbara Cox Anthony and Anne Cox Chambers, of the Cox Enterprises family, who each ranked No. 12 with a net worth of $12.5 billion each.

  • Financier Carl Icahn, who is presently pushing for changes at Time Warner, came in at No. 24 with a net worth of $8.5 billion.

  • Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone was No. 25 with a net worth of $8.4 billion.

  • EchoStar Communications Chairman Charlie Ergen was No. 30, with $7.1 billion.

  • News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch was No. 32 with $6.7 billion.

  • Liberty Media Chairman John Malone was 153rd with $1.9 billion.

  • Syndication talk show host Oprah Winfrey was No. 235 with $1.4 billion.

  • Roy Disney, an heir to The Walt Disney Co. empire, ranked No. 283 with $1.2 billion.
