The Federal Communications Commission adopted rules Thursday that extend the agency’s emergency alert requirements, which currently apply to analog TV operations, to digital broadcasters and cable and satellite operators.

Digital broadcasters and digital cable operators must be in compliance with the requirements by Dec. 31, 2006. Satellite operators must comply by May 31, 2007.

The emergency alert rules require stations to provide national emergency alert information provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The FCC also proposed to beef up its emergency alert regulations to ensure that the hearing-impaired, visually disabled and non-English-speakers are able to receive emergency information.
