Former ABC and Warner Bros. executive Ed Bleier’s name has gone up on a building on the campus of his alma mater, Syracuse University, and nearly $1 million in financial support from him will underwrite the expansion of the program headed by Robert Thompson, professor of television and popular culture.

The Center for the Study of Popular Culture, which opened in 1997, was renamed the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in a ceremony Wednesday afternoon. It is hoped that the grant from Mr. Bleier will, among other things, enable the center to bring in visiting faculty and raise the center’s profile as an academic center for the study of TV and pop culture.

“Media, particularly popular media, are the new DNA of our global society,” Mr. Bleier said in the announcement of his grant. “The content of American media is so pervasive — for good or ill — it must be seriously taught and examined. Bob Thompson is at the forefront, and I am honored to add my support.”
