The premiere of CBS’s new Monday night comedy “Courting Alex” outperformed its 9:30 p.m. (ET) time period average, giving the network a No. 2 finish in the time slot, behind Fox’s “24.”

“Alex,” which stars Jenna Elfman, scored a 5.1 rating in adults 18 to 49, according to Nielsen Media Research. The number also includes live-plus-same-day ratings for DVR viewership. That was 24 percent higher than the season-to-date time period average for the previous time slot occupant, the comedy “Out of Practice” and an 88 percent retention for 9 p.m. comedy “Two and a Half Men” (5.8).

CBS was tops for the night in the demo with a 5.3, driven in part by the highest-rated show for the night, “CSI: Miami” (6.5). Fox was second with a 4.7, followed by ABC (3.8), NBC (3.4), The WB (1.4) and UPN (1.3).
