Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer said Monday that it has named Rick Sands chief operating officer of the studio, a new position. He starts immediately.

Mr. Sands joins MGM from DreamWorks SKG, where he was president and COO. DreamWorks agreed last month to be acquired by Viacom’s Paramount Pictures.

The arrival of Mr. Sands comes just days after MGM announced that Daniel Taylor stepped down as president of the studio after nine months on the job.

Mr. Sands will be responsible for managing and leveraging MGM’s library of 4,000 movie titles and more than 10,400 TV episodes, exploring opportunities internationally, domestically and on new digital platforms. In addition, he will oversee MGM’s finance, operations and business affairs departments.

MGM was acquired last year by an investor group led by Sony Pictures Entertainment that includes Comcast and several private-equity firms.
