The stars of three CBS News correspondents are on the rise with Thursday’s announcement naming Jim Axelrod chief White House correspondent, Lara Logan chief foreign correspondent and Byron Pitts national correspondent. The changes take effect Monday.

“Jim, Lara and Byron are three of the most dedicated reporters and skilled storytellers in the business,” said CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus. “These high-profile assignments signal the depth of our commitment to covering Washington, international news and the national scene.”

Mr. McManus, who has said he will build and find stars as he works to restore CBS News’ standing, announced the changes the day after CBS News lost White House correspondent John Roberts to CNN.

The CBS News president praised Mr. Axelrod for his drive and said, “I can’t wait to turn him loose” on the White House beat. He said the promotion of Ms. Logan will “broaden the range of stories” the globe-trotting Ms. Logan covers. And he said Mr. Pitts’ promotion will showcase Mr. Pitts’ straightforward eloquence on major domestic stories as well as reports on “faith, family and the culture,” an additional assignment.
