The House of Representatives approved legislation Wednesday evening that sets Feb. 17, 2009, as the deadline for the transition to digital television.

The bill caps the federal subsidy to help consumers buy digital-to-analog converters at $1.5 billion. The measure, included in a controversial budget reconciliation package, was approved on a 216-214 vote. The measure recently passed the Senate in a 51-50 vote, and now awaits President Bush’s signature.
