ABC’s telecast of Super Bowl XL drew a 34.6 rating among adults 18 to 49, up 4 percent from last year’s game on Fox, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The game attracted an average audience of 90.72 million viewers, the largest since Super Bowl XXX in 1996 — which also featured the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were defeated 27-17 by the Dallas Cowboys.

Sunday’s broadcast of Pittsburgh’s victory over Seattle reached an estimated 141.4 million U.S. television viewers, second only to the 2004 Super Bowl.

ABC’s presentation of “Grey’s Anatomy” following the game drew a 16.6 rating among adults 18 to 49, the best performance for a post-Super Bowl entertainment program in five years.
