Fostering Diverse Voices

Fox Networks Group, in conjunction with Promax/Broadcast Designers’ Association and TelevisionWeek, is creating a program intended to foster diversity by recognizing ethnic minorities in marketing and promotions.

Diverse Voices is open to professionals who lead the creative effort behind spots that appeared during the 2005 calendar year on visual mediums ranging from television to the Internet. The submissions will be judged by a panel. TVWeek will announce the finalists in the June 5 issue, and they will be treated to a reception before the award ceremony.

The Promax/BDA 2006 Diverse Voices Award will be handed out at a ceremony during the Xtreme Performance conference June 22 at the Marriott Marquis in New York.

Diverse Voices is the brainchild of Robert Gottlieb, VP and creative director for Fox Sports, FSN and Fox College Sports; and Angela Gardner, VP of human resources for Fox Networks Group.

While searching for creative directors, Mr. Gottlieb said, he noticed a lack of diversity in the applicant pool. He said that “just by osmosis, you fall into group-think.” He said having a strong minority presence makes good business sense, adding, “We are going to be better creatively with these people in here.”

Mr. Gottlieb and Ms. Gardner found a partner in Promax/BDA, a marketing and promotional association that is chiefly centered on the television industry. While one award will be presented this year, the Diverse Voices program may be expanded and used as a template for further initiatives.
