‘Sopranos’ Debut Down From 2004 Opener; ‘Big Love’ Premiere Loses 47% of Lead-In Audience

Sunday night’s much-anticipated sixth-season return of “The Sopranos” received an average 5.7 household rating in metered markets, according to preliminary overnight returns.

That number is down 25 percent from its 2004 fifth season opener, but the total counts only live viewing. The figure does not factor in HBO’s increasing use of multiplexing and video-on-demand distribution, nor does it factor in DVR viewing. The technology and distribution shifts since 2004 make it difficult to accurately compare Sunday’s debut to the previous season.

The debut of HBO’s new polygamy drama “Big Love” received a 3.0 household rating, losing 47 percent of its “Sopranos” lead-in.
