The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced Monday it has named veteran TV executive Alan Perris chief operating officer.

Effective April 10, Mr. Perris will replace Todd Leavitt, who announced last September he was stepping down as president and chief operating officer. ATAS will no longer use the title president.

Mr. Perris will be based at ATAS’s North Hollywood, Calif., headquarters. He will oversee staff activities as well as serve as staff liaison to the academy and its foundation, headed by Chairman Steve Mosko.

Most recently Mr. Perris served as executive VP of business development for Entertainment Media Works, which operates the Web site StarStyle.com. Previously he was senior VP of first-run programming for both Sony and Telepictures and president of two station group production companies-Scripps Howard and Post-Newsweek. He also served as senior VP of programming for the Hallmark Channel, and worked as president and general manager at local stations in Miami and Jacksonville, Fla.
