FX will conclude its police drama “The Shield” with a 13-episode seventh season in addition to the upcoming 10-episode sixth season. Creator Shawn Ryan will continue as showrunner, shepherding the series to its conclusion after 88 total episodes.

“It has always been our intent to have the show exit television as it entered, as one of the best dramas series ever,” said John Landgraf, president and general manager of FX Networks. “We’re thrilled Shawn has come up with a great way to end the series and that it will require one final season for his vision to reach completion.”

For its most recent season, original episodes of “The Shield” averaged 2.8 million total viewers and 1.8 million adults 18 to 49, more than double the network’s first-quarter prime-time average.
