ABC confirmed Tuesday it is moving its new fall drama “Ugly Betty” from its Friday 8 p.m. (ET) time period to Thursday at 8 p.m.

“Betty,” the U.S. version of a popular Colombian telenovela, was an early favorite at the advertiser upfront in May and at the recent Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in July. Its Friday night scheduling, which was announced by ABC in May, was puzzling to some industry insiders as it was being put up against heavily female-skewing competition, including CBS’s “Ghost Whisperer,” Fox’s “Nanny 911” and NBC’s “Crossing Jordan.”

The move to Thursday gives “Betty” a much higher profile on a night ABC is targeting with renewed interest. The network is moving its Sunday night medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” to 9 p.m. Thursday for the fall.

“America’s Funniest Home Videos” is expected to move into “Betty’s” now-vacant fall time slot. ABC’s debuting comedies “Big Day” and “Notes From the Underbelly,” initially scheduled to debut in the Thursday 8 p.m. block in September, are now expected to debut later in the season.
