Sony Pictures Entertainment made its move into online video with the news Wednesday that it has acquired video-sharing web site Grouper.com for $65 million.
Sony’s bet is the latest in a series made by big media companies. Last week, Barry Diller’s IAC/InteractiveCorp paid about $10 million for a 51 percent stake of Collegehumor.com parent Connected Ventures, according to news reports. Earlier this month, Viacom’s MTV Networks spent $200 million to acquire Web stalwart Atom Entertainment.
According to Nielsen//NetRatings, Grouper attracted 630,000 unique visitors in July.
