Couric Newscast Recovers from Sept. 11 Decline

“CBS Evening News With Katie Couric” grew its total-viewer and adults 25 to 54 ratings over the week, taking first place in both groups by Thursday.

On Monday, Sept. 11, CBS garnered 7.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. That was good for third place behind “NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams” (8.3 million) and “ABC’s World News With Charles Gibson” (7.9 million). NBC won the adults 25 to 54 race with a 2.2, followed by CBS and ABC, tied with a 2.1.

The next day, CBS rebounded, taking first place in both total viewers and adults 25 to 54. On Wednesday, NBC boasted the best evening newscast in adults 25 to 54, while CBS held on to the total-viewer crown.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, CBS was once again tops in total viewers, garnering 8.2 million viewers, and among adults 25 to 54 with a 2.4 rating. ABC took second place with 7.6 million viewers and a 2.2 rating, followed by NBC with 7.3 million viewers and a 1.9 in adults 25 to 54.
