VNU Restructures; Whiting Now Nielsen Chairman

VNU on Monday announced restructuring plans that include cutbacks that will reduce costs by 10 percent and reduce its workforce by 4,000 people.

According to VNU’s new CEO David Calhoun, the new structure will allow the company to focus on client needs and invest strategically for the future.

As part of the reorganization, Susan Whiting, president and CEO of VNU’s Nielsen Media Research unit, will be executive VP of VNU and chairman of Nielsen, responsible for its media and entertainment businesses.

Mr. Calhoun said that the areas in which the company will be investing include Nielsen’s Anytime Anywhere Media Measurement initiative covering digital media; NielsenConnect, a service combining VNU’s consumer, retail and media information headed by recently hired CEO Jon Mandel; and ACNielsen Loyalty, a new service that helps retailers manage frequent-shopper data.
