The morning after this week’s episode of Fox’s “24,” executive producer Howard Gordon was on the phone, insistently seeking ratings information on how the program fared.

“I look at them obsessively,” Mr. Gordon said of the ratings in a Tuesday interview with TelevisionWeek Publisher Chuck Ross.

“24” came in second in the ratings Monday night behind NBC’s “Heroes.”

This week’s episode of “24” gave Mr. Gordon an opportunity to let the characters react to big story events that rocked the first episodes and work on character development.

He promised more insight into main character Jack Bauer’s background in future episodes.

“We’ll see more about Jack’s past and answer some questions about why Jack is Jack,” Mr. Gordon said.
