The commercial-free premiere of FX’s new original series “Dirt” attracted 3.4 million viewers Tuesday night.

FX said the figure was similar to the number of viewers who tuned in to the 2006 season premieres of “Rescue Me” and “The Shield.”

The figures were based on fast national ratings from Nielsen Media Research, based on live plus same-day data, the network said Wednesday. Because of the holidays, competitive ratings information won’t be available until Thursday.

Among viewers 18 to 49, the show attracted 2.1 million viewers, down about 6 percent from “The Shield” and “Rescue Me.” FX’s “Nip/Tuck” drew 2 million adults in the 18 to 49 demo when it premiered in 2003.

The show, staring Courteney Cox, received lukewarm reviews before its debut.
