When “American Idol” moves on to Hollywood for the next round of the talent contest, the judges will show no mercy to singers who don’t measure up, the program’s executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, said.

“The first day of Hollywood is a bloodbath,” Mr. Lythgoe told TelevisionWeek Editorial Director Chuck Ross. “The judges just, I don’t know what happened, but they really, really decidedly wanted only the best this season.”

Mr. Lythgoe also urged “American Idol” viewers to enter the show’s song-writing contest. A Web site with information on that competition will launch soon, Mr. Lythgoe said on TVWeek.com’s Backlot Talk podcast interview series.
