BitTorrent introduced its online video store Monday with film and TV content from 20th Century Fox, G4, Lionsgate, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures and Starz Media.

The new store offers TV shows for $1.99 an episode, the standard industry rate, and rents films for $2.99 to $3.99, in line with brick-and-mortar video stores.

The introduction of BitTorrent’s service represents fresh competition for existing online stores such as Apple’s iTunes, AOL Video and Amazon Unbox.

BitTorrent’s entrance also is noteworthy because its technology has been used by many pirates to illegally share films and TV shows online. The store represents a new direction for BitTorrent to move beyond simply offering software.

The service features TV shows from Comedy Central, Fox, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike, VH1, FX and others.
