John Reiss, executive producer of NBC’s “Nightly News With Brian Williams,” is leaving the newscast on Friday, NBC executives have confirmed. A network representative said Mr. Reiss’ replacement will be announced next week.

The decision to leave has been in the works for the past month, according to a source at NBC News, who noted Mr. Reiss has asked to be reassigned to other duties.

That source also said Mr. Reiss had requested the change before ABC’s “World News” with Charles Gibson beat the NBC newscast in ratings for two of the past three weeks and that ratings had nothing to do with the decision.

Mr. Reiss had been executive producer for “Nightly News” for nearly two years.

So far this year, NBC has led the nightly newscasts on the broadcast networks with an average of 9.8 million viewers, edging out ABC’s “World News,” which is pulling in 9.5 million viewers. CBS, meanwhile, is averaging 7.6 million in the same timeframe.
