Nielsen Suspends New Orleans Ratings

Sep 2, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Nielsen Media Research will not be publishing any ratings information from the New Orleans Designated Market Area, the 53rd-largest in the country, until it has established typical levels and distribution in its sample of 440 homes. The sample includes New Orleans, counties and parishes in Louisiana and counties in Mississippi.
A Nielsen spokeswoman said Tuesday that it is not clear when there may be publishable data from New Orleans.
Only 50 of the 400 sample homes had called in Monday, the day Hurricane Gustav made landfall. At least 180 homes must be in-tab, or providing usable data, in order for Nielsen to consider publishing ratings. If there are fewer than 335 homes in-tab, testing would be needed to check for geographic skew that might lead to data being withheld.
Saturday (316 homes) and Sunday (273 homes) data was deemed not geographically reliable for release.
The spokeswoman said the faults are thought to be mainly due to power outages. Some may be due to residents turning off their power before complying with mandatory evacuation orders.
Residents are expected to be allowed to return home parish by parish.
Nielsen’s field representatives in the area also evacuated, and all are safe and accounted for.
The spokeswoman said Nielsen needs to allow time for people to get back into their homes. If no equipment was unplugged or damaged, meters are likely to return to reporting status on their own once power is restored. Otherwise, field visits may be necessary.
Nielsen will send additional field personnel into the market to help in recovery.
Katrina hit New Orleans in late August 2005 and ratings were not restored until February 2006.
However, Gustav did not wreak the same human and infrastructural damage as Katrina.

  1. WWL TV was the only station worth turning to. Rock solid, as usual, without the thrills and chills. Just the facts, Mame. WDSU did its usual importing of outside on air experts from the Hearst-Argyle circle of stations. Silly. It confused people and probably didn’t get one more viewer than last time (Katrina) they tried the tactic. Breck at WVUE did his usual Diva crap. He is a drama queen. WGNO, ABC26, was competent with its weather people and reporters. They were steady and informative. But the network men and women need to stay in New York. I like Fox, usually, but they botched this one, as did CNN, NBC, and CBSGeraldo is a modern day Dan Rather, and I don’t mean. that in a good sense. Anderson Cooper, by the way, should not do a 360. A 180 would suffice… back to New York. Shep Smith? Same thing, pal. Some advice? Leave the reporting to the locals. They may be a pain, but they know the lay of the land.

  2. I DISAGREE! Thank God for Bob Breck’s hurricane forecasting on WVUE TV. If Bart or anyone watched closely, he would have noticed that the other TV stations’ forecasters watched Bob Breck and then slowly followed his thinking. For several hours Bob Breck was the only one who saw and predicted the dry weather wrap around inside Gustav. I saw the 3D picture he had. The other stations were still predicting and running Nagin crying it was the “mother of all storms.” When Gustav passed and Ike was brewing, I was anxious to see what Breck had to say. He is the most accurate hurricane forecaster in New Orleans. This is because he’s been here watching them for 20 years or more. Trust me – there’s no match for experience and maturity. The older I get, the more I know this to be true. Sometimes the people who think they know it all don’t know how much they DON’T know. And BTW, Chris Franklin, the morning weather guy, is pretty good too. They got my vote in the next Nielsen!
