HBO Documentary Films President Sheila Nevins will be this year’s recipient of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Governors Award.

Nevins, who is the 15th individual to be presented with ATAS’s Governors Award since 1978, will receive the honor at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony Sept. 12 in Los Angeles.

The award honors an “individual, company or organization that has made a substantial impact and demonstrated the extraordinary use of television.”

“Sheila Nevins is highly deserving of the Governor’s Award after 21 years of distinguished participation in the Emmy competition by her acclaimed HBO unit, as well as for her lengthy, multiple award-winning career,” Television Academy Chairman-CEO John Shaffner said in a prepared statement. “Sheila’s remarkably sustained work-in-progress continues into the 2009 season with the unit’s trademark service to the documentary ideal.”

During her 21-year run at HBO as an executive producer or producer, Nevins has received 22 Primetime Emmy Awards, 25 News and Documentary Emmy Awards and 31 George Foster Peabody Awards, in addition to a personal Peabody Award. This year alone, Nevins has received four Primetime Emmy nominations.

Past recipients of the Governors Award include ABC, Alistair Cooke, "American Idol Gives Back," Bob Hope, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC for the 9/11 special “Supporting America: A Tribute to Heroes," Geographic Channel’s “Preserve Our Planet,” HBO’s "Addiction,” Grant Tinker, Jerry Lewis, Johnny Carson, Lifetime Network’s "Stop the Violence Against Women" initiative, Lucille Ball, Masterpiece Theatre, MTV’s "Fight For Your Rights: Take a Stand Against Violence,” PBS, Red Skelton, Showtime’s diversity programming, Ted Turner, Viacom and Walter Cronkite.
