Sony has a new television project in the works that’s based on a successful feature film franchise. Variety reports that Sony Pictures Animation is developing a children’s series based on the “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” movies.
The project will be developed with family entertainment group DHX Media of “Yo Gabba Gabba!” The companies plan to market the show to both U.S. broadcasters and digital channels, with the project including 26 animated episodes, each running 22 minutes.
The original 2009 movie, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” based on a popular 1978 children’s book, featured the voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris and James Caan and received numerous awards, including a Golden Globe for best animated feature film. Reportedly made on a budget of $100 million, the movie earned $243 million in worldwide box office.
A sequel, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” released in 2013, has earned $274 million worldwide.
