For years the word has been that the vast majority of the "Tonight Show" hosted by Johnny Carson had been destroyed.

It turns out that while that is true about the episodes Carson hosted for the first ten years of the "Tonight Show, " all of the episodes he did from 1973 on have been preserved.

And now almost all this material is going to be made available online, according to the New York Times.

According to the article, "a rejuvenated Carson Web site, at johnnycarson.com…will feature video clips from the 30-year history of ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.’ ”

Furthermore, the story says, there will also be "an online archive — available at first only to industry professionals — where users can search a digital inventory of Carson’s program and watch nearly every surviving minute of his ‘Tonight Show’ run."

Jeff Sotzing, who is Carson’s nephew who is also president of Carson Entertainment, told the Times, that the company has wanted to do this for a long time, but “the technology has really not been there. You could put it online, previously, but you could not put everything online. We wanted to make it accessible all at once.”

  2. Amen, Red. Amen.
