WPIX-TV Ousts Kaity Tong and Jim Watkins From Posts, Creates Deskless Role for New Anchor in Major Shuffle at the New York City Station NY Daily News
Longtime anchors Kaity Tong and Jim Watkins have been bumped from their posts as WPIX-TV--owned by Tribune and affiliated with the CW--has created a deskless role for its new 10 p.m. anchor, Jodi Applegate, reports the New York Daily News.
Tong will now report from a remote studio in the city's boroughs, which the story says is designed to get her "closer to the people," while Watkins has been reassigned to weekends.
Applegate will move around the newsroom without a desk, and the show will use green hues to tie into its affiliation with the CW.
The show will begin with 11 stories in 11 minutes, during which Applegate will have little screen time, the article says.
But the move, which is designed to help the station stand out, isn't making some viewers happy, the piece notes. "Nothing more is needed than Kaity and Jim, Mr. G and Lolita," one viewer wrote, the story says.
