Netflix has signed its largest-ever deal for original first-run content. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the deal with DreamWorks Animation makes the streaming site the premiere home of new original television programs based on the studio’s franchises.

DreamWorks Animation will debut original shows on Netflix, with the deal covering more than 300 hours of new programming, the story says. The deal is part of DreamWorks’ plan to expand its TV production and distribution.

Current franchises include "Shrek," "Madagascar," "Kung Fu Panda" and "How to Train Your Dragon," while the company also owns classic characters such as Frosty the Snowman and Lassie.

The first series for Netflix is expected to air sometime in 2014, although timing and financial details weren’t disclosed.

“Netflix is a visionary company that continues to redefine the way audiences watch television, and it is a thrill to add to their growing momentum," DreamWorks Animation Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said.

The agreement doesn’t impact DreamWorks Animation shows already airing on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, the piece adds.
