The premiere of Disney Channel’s “High School Musical 2″ was watched by a record-breaking 17.2 million viewers Friday night.
The performance ranks “High School Musical 2″ made it the most-watched cable telecast ever, topping “Monday Night Football” on ESPN on September 23, 2006, which drew 17.2 million viewers.
It was also the most watched telecast of any kind among kids 6 to 11 and tweens 9 to 14.
The previous most-watched cable movie was “Crossfire Trail,” which appeared on TNT in 2001.
The shows that followed “High School Musical 2″ on Disney Channel also put in record-breaking performances.
A 15-minute preview of the upcoming series “Phienas and Ferb” drew 10.8 million total viewers, and a new episode of “Hannah Montana” which appeared after that became the No. 1 series telecast in basic cable higher with 10.7 million total viewers, 4.2 million kids 6-11 and 4.1 million tweens 8-14.
